More Parks and Trails Opened to eBikes
In a recent announcement, the Michigan DNR approved Class 1 and 2 eBikes on state-owned trails. You can read more about this announcement here. This is great news for Michigan riders and we applaud the DNR for taking this step that will allow more people, especially those with mobility challenges, the ability to explore the outdoors. But what does this mean for the rest of us outside the “Great Lakes State”?
The spokesperson for the Michigan DNR said the agency pursued the change “after getting lots of feedback from the cyclist community, including at public meetings where the proposal was introduced.” It’s been proven that one of the best ways to incite change is to take an active role. We continue to encourage the Bakcou Tribe across the country to help educate their local officials, provide feedback, and then show your support by attending public meetings where these topics are addressed.
At Bakcou, we have been working with local Utah DWR officials to show the benefits of eBikes and explain their proper use, with hopes of dispelling some of the misconceptions regarding eBike use on trails. In our meetings, we have found the Utah DWR officials to be open and willing to listen to our perspectives. We’re confident that wildlife resource officials in other states will have the same openness.
So, let’s get out there and make a difference through our voices and actions. The results will have a meaningful, positive impact now and in the future.
